LUCIE MCDOUGALL
SEWING + THREAD
the conceptual meaning to weave is a vital part to my practice, weaving and connecting elements from my life and my personal feeling of home. I want to seamlessly intertwine every aspect of my art to give an overall product which is an accurate emotional reflection of environment and self.
the weavers at Ardalanish used organic dyes sourced from the landscape surrounding them.
thinking about the process of weaving and the use of natural but bright colour
'"I weave every day," he says, "and it's a way of honouring the past." - Weaving a path to Scotland; LOVE OF COUNTRY: A HEBRIDEAN JOURNEY by Madeleine Bunting
artist Eroll Pires Nelson uses text which is woven within found materials such as seed pods and plant matter. the combination of written word and the natural world is an important theme throughout my work.
walking, collecting and sketching are all important parts of the process of weaving. gathering relevant information about the environment being depicted.
JESSICA RANKIN
Jessica Rankin was someone I discovered actually through my research into Julie Mehretu. The Australian artist identifies as a landscape artist depicting landscapes abstractly through paint, paper, drawing and stitching. the stitching comes as a combined element of her work never usually a stand alone, used to map and contour lines which hold meaning.
"scale of the mark or the amount of labour that goes into it"
"often trying to capture drawing with the thread" - Rankin, White Cube 2018.
